Substance Abuse

Help for Substance Abuse

Do you think you or someone you care about might have a problem with alcohol or drugs?

A “substance use disorder” or “chemical dependency” is a term used when someone cannot control his or her use of a physical substance like alcohol, drugs or prescription medications. They cannot quit using and they cannot limit how much they use.

The following are common signs of a substance use disorder.

  • Not being able to quit or cut down.
  • Experiencing “blackouts.” Not remembering things that happened while using.
  • Drinking or using alone. Or hiding use.
  • Drinking or using drugs to forget about problems.
  • Doing things while “under the influence” that cause regret.
  • Not being able to enjoy activities without using.
  • Ignore important responsibilities to drink or use drugs.
  • Friends, family or employer express concern about substance use.
  • Doing almost anything to get the substance.
  • Financial or legal problems resulting from drug or alcohol use.

Counseling can help

Not only can it help you stop using, but it can help you stay clean. If you are dependent on alcohol or drugs, you may not know how to stop. Counseling can help you cope with cravings and avoid relapse.

If you have a loved one who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, a Synergy Center counselor can support you as you take care of yourself while you help the one you love.

You may need more support than your friends and family can give you, especially if they also drink or use recreational drugs.  Even if you are in a program like Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or Al-Anon, you may benefit from professional counseling.

If you have tried to quit and failed, don’t give up! Counseling may be the difference between success and relapse.

Feelings like worry, anger and sadness can make you crave alcohol or drugs. Many people use drugs or alcohol to “self-medicate” as a way to cope with other mental health issues like anxiety or depression.  Our professional counselors can help you manage these issues without turning to drugs or alcohol.

Sometimes just visiting a place or participating in certain activities where you used to use alcohol or drugs can trigger an overpowering desire to use a substance again. Substance abuse counseling can help develop tools to cope with these cravings.
